Injury Updates On Deebo Samuel And CMC; 3 Takeaways From Kyle
The San Francisco 49ers had a rough go of it in Week 6, not only losing their first game of the season, but also suffering a number of injuries. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey were both forced to leave the game early, and their status for Week 7 is uncertain.
Samuel suffered a shoulder injury on the first play of the game, a jet sweep. He was able to return to the game briefly, but left again in the first quarter and did not return. X-rays showed no immediate concerns, but Samuel underwent an MRI to assess the extent of the injury.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that Samuel is day-to-day. "We got to see how it recovers this week, and it’s just how his body is going to handle it," Shanahan said. "You never know how those react. So we’ll wait and see."
McCaffrey suffered an oblique/rib injury in the third quarter of the game. He was able to finish the game, but was clearly in pain. Shanahan said on Monday that McCaffrey is also day-to-day, and that he is awaiting the results of an MRI.
"Hopefully, it’s not both, but we got to wait to see for sure," Shanahan said.
Three Takeaways From Kyle
In addition to providing injury updates, Shanahan also offered some thoughts on the 49ers’ loss to the Browns. Here are three takeaways:
- The 49ers need to get better at stopping the run. The Browns rushed for 204 yards against the 49ers, including 113 yards from Nick Chubb. Shanahan said that the 49ers’ defensive ends need to do a better job of setting the edge, and that the safeties need to come down and help stop the run.
- The 49ers need to get their running game going. The 49ers rushed for just 83 yards against the Browns, and Elijah Mitchell averaged just 3.7 yards per carry. Shanahan said that the 49ers need to do a better job of blocking up front, and that they need to find ways to get Mitchell and McCaffrey involved in the passing game more.
- The 49ers need to protect the quarterback. The 49ers gave up four sacks against the Browns, and Jimmy Garoppolo was under pressure all day. Shanahan said that the 49ers need to do a better job of protecting their quarterback, and that they need to find ways to get the ball out of his hands quickly.
The 49ers will look to bounce back from their loss to the Browns when they face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7. The Chiefs are one of the best teams in the NFL, so the 49ers will need to be at their best if they want to win.
What does this mean for the 49ers’ offense?
The 49ers’ offense is one of the most dynamic in the NFL, but it will be shorthanded in Week 7 if Samuel and McCaffrey are unable to play.
Samuel is a versatile playmaker who can line up at wide receiver, running back, and even quarterback. He is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.
McCaffrey is one of the most talented running backs in the NFL. He is a shifty runner who can also catch the ball out of the backfield.
If Samuel and McCaffrey are unable to play, the 49ers will need to rely on other players to step up. Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and Ray-Ray McCloud will need to produce at a high level in the passing game. Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason will need to carry the load in the running game.
What does this mean for the 49ers’ defense?
The 49ers’ defense has been one of the best in the NFL this season. However, they showed some cracks against the Browns’ run game.
If Samuel and McCaffrey are unable to play, the 49ers may need to be more conservative on offense. This could mean running the ball more and throwing the ball less.
The 49ers’ defense will also need to step up in a big way. They will need to find a way to stop the Chiefs’ high-powered offense.
What should the 49ers do next?
The 49ers should focus on getting Samuel and McCaffrey healthy. If they are able to play in Week
