What is a Hero?
A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Heroes can be found in all walks of life, from firefighters who rush into burning buildings to save lives to ordinary people who perform acts of kindness and compassion.

Types of Heroes
There are many different types of heroes, but some of the most common include:

• Everyday heroes: These are people who perform acts of kindness and compassion in their everyday lives. They may help a stranger in need, volunteer their time to a worthy cause, or simply be a good friend and neighbor.
• First responders: These are people who risk their lives to protect others. They include firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and other emergency personnel.
• Military heroes: These are people who serve in the armed forces and defend their country. They may risk their lives in combat or perform other dangerous duties.
• Social justice heroes: These are people who fight for justice and equality for all people. They may advocate for the rights of the poor, the marginalized, or the oppressed.
• Cultural heroes: These are people who have made significant contributions to society through their art, music, literature, or other creative works. They may inspire others to think differently about the world or to pursue their dreams.

What Makes a Hero?
There is no one definition of what makes a hero. However, some of the qualities that are often associated with heroes include:

• Courage: Heroes are willing to put themselves in danger to help others or to stand up for what they believe in.
• Selflessness: Heroes are more concerned with the well-being of others than with their own.
• Compassion: Heroes care about others and want to make a difference in the world.
• Integrity: Heroes act honestly and ethically, even when it is difficult.
• Determination: Heroes are persistent and never give up on their goals, even when faced with challenges.

Examples of Heroes

There are many examples of heroes throughout history and in the present day. Here are just a few:

• Nelson Mandela: Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalised racism and fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.

• Mother Teresa: Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun and missionary who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. On 4 September 2016, Pope Francis canonised her as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

• Martin Luther King Jr.: King was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. An African-American church leader and the son of early civil rights activist and minister Martin Luther King Sr., King advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. • Malala Yousafzai: Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northwest Pakistan, where the local Taliban at times had at least temporarily banned girls from attending school. Yousafzai’s advocacy has since grown into an international movement.

• Greta Thunberg: Thunberg is a Swedish environmental activist who is known for her work in raising awareness about climate change. She is the founder of the Fridays for Future movement, which has inspired millions of students around the world to strike from school and protest climate inaction. Thunberg has been praised for her activism and her commitment to fighting climate change.

These are just a few examples of heroes from all walks of life. Heroes are all around us, and they inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves.
